High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Kanwal Public School, we are proud to introduce our PIVOT program - a comprehensive High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) initiative designed to nurture and develop the talents of all our students. The PIVOT program embodies our commitment to recognising and cultivating high potential across intellectual, creative, physical, and social-emotional domains.
What is the PIVOT Program?
PIVOT stands for Potential, Innovation, Voice, Opportunity, and Talent. This program ensures that every student has the chance to demonstrate their unique abilities and be supported to excel.
• Potential: We identify high-potential students to transform their abilities into exceptional talents.
• Innovation: Students are encouraged to think creatively, solve problems, and develop original ideas.
• Voice: Pupils are empowered to express their thoughts, ideas, and learning preferences confidently.
• Opportunity: We provide enriched and challenging learning experiences tailored to extend each student’s capabilities.
• Talent: We celebrate and develop talents not only academically but also in the creative arts, physical pursuits, and social-emotional skills.
- Teachers identify high potential and gifted students through observations and assessments. Within classrooms, explicit teaching strategies are used to challenge and engage these students, encouraging critical thinking and creative problem-solving.
- Kanwal Public School offers a broad range of extracurricular activities, including STEM programs, creative arts (dance, band, choir), environmental education and gardening, The KPS Oratory competition, debating, cross country, athletics, and the swimming carnival. These activities provide enriched opportunities for students to grow their talents beyond the classroom.
- We also provide access to local, state and national competitions and events, to help students explore and extend their talents. These opportunities include but are not limited to, PSSA representation, the Central Coast Primary Schools’ Public Speaking Competition, Premier’s Reading Challenge, Game Changer Challenge and involvement in the Children’s University Program.
