Kanwal Public School received a grant late in 2017 from the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation and Science to establish a Makerspace. The grant was received under the Maker Projects Stream, which is an element of the Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Programme. This Programme is part of the Inspiring All Australians in Digital Literacy and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) element of the National Innovation and Science Agenda (NISA).
Kanwal Makerspace promotes creative thinking, experimentation and collaboration. Students are encouraged to use a STEM design process to identify and solve problems that are relevant and meaningful to them. Our Makerspace is a space where students of all ages can come to work on special interest STEM and creative projects, including coding, designing and building. Students have access to a large range of resources including technology, coding and circuit kits, building tools, wood and wire, cardboard, clay, recycled materials and more.
Through the Kanwal Makerspace, students have the opportunity to develop future focused learning skills such as collaboration, persistence, communication, self-regulation and problem solving. Kanwal Makerspace allows students with specific interests to work on projects and activities. It also provides a creative space for students to explore, experiment and tinker.
