Kanwal Public School has an enthusiastic school band which meets once a week for rehearsals during the school term. The Band Director is Mr Rowen McBride. Our school band has performed at a variety of school events, had public performances and performs yearly in Band Fest.
Concert Band Update Term 3 2020
New COVID guidelines for schools delivered this week means we have had to amend our Concert Band rehearsals and music tuition delivery.
What Does This Mean?
Band Tuition (during school)
* students will still attend their usual Tuesday group tutorial
* during this group session students will learn theory skills and repertoire without playing their instrument (for the first part of their lesson)
* students will then work individually with their tutor to apply these skills on their instrument
* reducing group sizes and using additional tutors will ensure students still receive a full lesson-worth of content each week
Band Rehearsal (after school)
*students will still attend their weekly band rehearsal each Tuesday after school
*students will work on ensemble skills using percussion, clapping and other techniques which do not require ‘blowing’

Our Senior Band students attended two-days of workshops in Newcastle hosted by the Newcastle University Conservatorium of Music. This proved to be both an enjoyable and educational experience for all who attended.
The event concluded with an amazing concert in front of a huge audience, on the final day. With over 600 children attending from the Hunter and Central Coast School Band programs, the concert showcased five large bands with over 100 children in each.
Congratulations to our talented Kanwal kids who participated with enthusiasm and displayed outstanding behaviour over both days. We extend a big thank you to our wonderful parents for providing transport to the event.
Our fantastic Band Program includes students from Years 3 – 6 and is run by our very talented Musical Director, Rowen McBride (who was also a tutor at Band Link). On Tuesday 27th June we also showcased our Beginner Band students at their first public performance for family and friends. Well done to all of our mini-musicians for their patience and persistence at learning to master their chosen instrument.
